I recently turned 48. It made me think about a moment eight years ago, on my 40th birthday, when I strapped into an exoskeleton at a We Are Wearables event I produced in Toronto.

I will never forget the feeling of being augmented by a machine. My body was supported by motors and sensors, letting me borrow strength and power beyond my own. The system moved with me and responded to my intent, and it was this partnership with the device that stayed with me most.

That experience shaped how I think about robotics. A lot of the public conversation focuses on machines as replacements for human effort. However, many of the most useful systems are working with people and augmenting them. They are helping people walk, lift, carry, and work more safely. Reducing strain, extending endurance, and making difficult or physically demanding tasks more manageable.

For some people, these systems support independence and mobility in very direct ways. They make it possible to stand, walk, or move through the world with more confidence. For others, they help protect bodies on the job or make it possible to keep working longer. In both cases, the impact is practical and often life-changing.

This is what effective human–machine pairing looks like. The system supports movement and effort, while the person provides direction and judgment. The result is greater mobility, safer work, and an impact that is deeply felt in everyday life.
