  • Zoox has begun deploying its purpose-built robotaxi on public roads in Austin, starting in several central neighborhoods.
  • Initial access is limited to employees and invited riders, with broader availability planned through an early rider program later this year.

Zoox has begun running its robotaxis on Austin streets, shifting from behind-the-scenes testing into a visible rollout. The company is building its service around a vehicle made for riders rather than drivers. This move comes after months of mapping and trial runs across the city.

Since mid-2024, Zoox has used retrofitted vehicles in Austin to map routes and train its systems. After mapping, those vehicles conducted autonomous driving with safety drivers before transferring collected data to the dedicated robotaxi. The new phase introduces the purpose-built vehicle into areas including downtown and nearby districts.

Rides are currently limited to employees and their invited guests, with plans to expand access over time. The company said it will grow its service area in the coming months and introduce an early rider program later in the year. Austin joins Las Vegas and San Francisco as part of Zoox’s active markets.

🌀 Tom’s Take:

Moving into Austin gives Zoox another real city to run its full system the way it’s meant to operate. Each new location brings different streets, traffic patterns, and edge cases—exactly the kind of exposure needed before opening things up to more riders.
