WeRide and Uber Launch Robotaxi Rides in Dubai, Advancing UAE AV Deployment
- Riders can now book WeRide Robotaxis via the Uber app in Dubai’s Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah districts.
- Vehicles include onboard specialists during this trial phase, ahead of a fully driverless service planned for 2026.
WeRide and Uber have launched autonomous Robotaxi rides in Dubai through a partnership with the city’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The 'Autonomous' option in the Uber app is available in select locations across Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah. Tawasul will manage the fleet as the service operator for WeRide vehicles on the Uber platform.
The launch follows a pilot phase that began in April and continues to include a vehicle specialist on board each ride to ensure safety and reliability. This transitional setup is designed to prepare the service for fully driverless operations expected in early 2026.
The deployment supports the Emirate’s goal of 25% autonomous journeys by 2030, as outlined in Dubai’s Self-Driving Transport Strategy. According to Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, shared mobility users rose 28% from 2023 to 2024. WeRide currently operates over 100 Robotaxis in the UAE as part of its regional expansion.
🌀 Tom’s Take:
Dubai’s RTA is making autonomy part of the city’s transport system, not just a future concept. The 25% goal is driving real decisions about where and how AVs hit the road.
