SailGP has introduced its most immersive fan feature yet with the launch of a real-time AR Tabletop Viewer for iOS. Now available in the SailGP app, the new viewer turns any flat surface into a dynamic 3D model of a live SailGP racecourse, complete with real-time insights and control features.
The new viewer allows fans to control their perspective of the race using simple touch gestures on their smartphone. It also features SailGP's LiveLine AR overlay, which displays detailed tactical data, such as boat speeds and wind direction, as the action unfolds. The feature is designed to increase access and engagement with the sport from any location.
“With the launch of our new Tabletop Viewer, fans can experience SailGP like never before,” said SailGP Chief Technology Officer, Warren Jones, on the company's website. “We’re constantly striving to make the sport more accessible, more engaging and more immersive for fans and this technology does exactly that. Our boats already race just meters from the shoreline, but now we’re bringing fans even closer to the action and providing real-time insight, wherever they are in the world. It means fans will never miss a moment with the action unfolding right in front of them.”
The viewer debuts ahead of the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix on June 7-8, allowing fans to experience live or replayed races directly through the app. As part of a broader tech push for Season 5, this AR feature builds on previous AR/VR enhancements and is powered by Oracle.
🌀 Tom's Take:
Don’t sleep on mobile AR. The smartphone has quietly become a powerful AR machine, and its greatest asset is mass adoption. Real-time data visualization in sports is a natural fit, and SailGP’s Tabletop Viewer demonstrates how AR can enhance fan engagement at scale.
