NVIDIA Releases Open Reasoning Model to Support Safer Autonomous Driving

NVIDIA has released DRIVE Alpamayo-R1 (AR1), a reasoning model built for autonomous vehicle research. It’s a VLA (vision-language-action) model based on the company’s Cosmos Reason platform. NVIDIA describes it as the first of its kind for AV research, and says it’s intended to “give autonomous vehicles the common sense to drive more like humans do.”
AR1 connects chain-of-thought reasoning, or the ability to break down a scenario and evaluate possible outcomes, with path planning, which helps the vehicle decide where and how to move. The model approaches each scenario by breaking it into steps, weighing possible actions, and using contextual data to guide its decisions. It produces “reasoning traces” that show how specific choices are made, offering insight into the decision process. According to NVIDIA, applying reinforcement learning after initial training helped improve the model’s reasoning in more complex scenarios.
AR1 is available as an open-source release on GitHub and Hugging Face, along with a subset of training data from NVIDIA’s Physical AI Open Datasets. Researchers can customize the model for non-commercial use. NVIDIA has also released AlpaSim, a tool for testing AR1’s reasoning in simulated driving scenarios.
