New Uber Partnership Brings 20,000 AI-Driven Lucid Robotaxis to Streets

- Uber plans to deploy over 20,000 Lucid vehicles equipped with Nuro Driver technology across multiple global markets within the next six years.
- The robotaxis, integrated with Level 4 autonomy, will launch exclusively on the Uber platform, beginning in a major U.S. city next year.
Lucid, Nuro, and Uber are joining forces on a new robotaxi service expected to launch in a major U.S. city next year. The program combines electric SUVs from Lucid with Nuro’s self-driving technology and will operate exclusively through the Uber app.
"Autonomous vehicles have enormous potential to transform our cities for the better," said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, in an official news release. "We're thrilled to partner with Nuro and Lucid on this new robotaxi program, purpose-built just for the Uber platform, to safely bring the magic of autonomous driving to more people across the world."
Over the next six years, the companies plan to deploy more than 20,000 Lucid vehicles worldwide. Operated by Uber and its partners, the fleet will be powered by Nuro’s Level 4 autonomy and is already in testing at a closed course in Las Vegas.
As part of the partnership, Uber plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in both Lucid and Nuro. The companies aim to deliver a cost-efficient, high-availability service built on long-range EVs, AI-driven autonomy, and global ride-hailing infrastructure.
🌀 Tom’s Take:
Uber’s planned investment shows it’s backing a full-stack strategy, from vehicle to rider. With EV hardware, AV software, and fleet access under one roof, this trio enables vertical integration, bringing robotaxis from concept to the street.
