  • Meta has redesigned its Haptics Studio to improve usability and speed up tactile content creation.
  • The update introduces new tools including Freeform, a vector-based editor for custom haptic effects.

Meta has updated Haptics Studio, its tool for creating tactile effects in virtual environments, with a new interface and features. The tool is part of a suite that includes the Meta Haptics SDK and a VR companion app used to audition haptic designs in real time, which also has a new guided onboarding flow.

The new Freeform tool lets users create haptic effects from scratch without using audio as a base. It uses a vector-style pen tool where you can draw directly on an open canvas, and the system automatically sets the length of the effect based on where you stop drawing. This allows for fully custom haptics, such as tactile feedback for buttons or spatial interactions.

Other Studio additions include the Emphasis tool for one-click tactile accents, Trim for adjusting clip duration, Batch Analysis for editing multiple clips at once, and Stereo Split for managing left and right channels. A redesigned toolbar consolidates access to these tools for more efficient editing.

🌀 Tom’s Take:

As MR and VR aim to immerse users by making digital environments feel real, they need more than just visuals. Haptics add a tactile layer that enhances presence and brings the sense of touch into the experience. Meta’s new tools give developers more precise and flexible ways to create that physical feedback.
