Meta Opens Developer Preview for AI Glasses Toolkit
- Developers can now prototype mobile app integrations using the camera, microphone, and audio features of Meta’s AI glasses.
- SDKs, documentation, and testing tools are available through the Meta Wearables Developer Center.
Meta has opened the developer preview of its Wearables Device Access Toolkit, following its initial announcement at Connect 2025. The toolkit gives developers early access to the sensors on Meta’s portfolio of AI glasses. With these tools, developers can now begin prototyping hands-free experiences for their mobile apps.
To help with their development, Meta has made SDKs for iOS and Android, technical documentation, and testing tools available through the new Meta Wearables Developer Center. The first version of the toolkit opens up on-device sensors, including the microphone, camera, and open-ear audio from the glasses. Notably, the SDK does not give developers access to the Meta AI capabilities of the glasses, including voice commands. Nor does it support the visual capabilities of Meta's new Meta Ray-Ban Display.
Developers can share builds with invited testers, but only select partners can publish to the general public at this time. Publishing is available to limited audiences in the preview phase “so that we can responsibly test, learn, and refine our toolkit.” Meta says general availability is expected in 2026.
Early collaborators include Disney Imagineering, Twitch, Microsoft, and Be My Eyes, who have used the toolkit to test prototypes for in-park navigation, hands-free streaming, and support for blind and low-vision users. These early projects highlight how developers are applying the toolkit in real-world scenarios ahead of general availability.
🌀 Tom’s Take:
This is the first meaningful opening for developers to extend what Meta’s AI glasses can do. With access to sensors, mobile apps can now see and hear from the user’s point of view, turning the glasses into a real-time interface for the world around them.
