  • Canon is developing the RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lens for the EOS R7, enabling spatial video capture for Apple Vision Pro.
  • The lens features a natural field of view and high-speed autofocus, optimized for immersive video creation.

Canon announced the development of a new dual lens, the RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL, designed for its EOS R7 camera to record spatial video compatible with Apple Vision Pro. The lens will be part of Canon’s EOS VR System and is expected to be available in fall 2024.

This new lens allows users to capture immersive video through dual optics that mimic the human field of view. Its high-speed autofocus supports creators of all skill levels in producing detailed and stable spatial footage, even in difficult lighting.

Canon’s EOS VR System simplifies immersive video production by recording light from both lenses onto a single CMOS sensor, eliminating the need for synchronization or post-filming assembly. According to Canon, this new product marks the first dedicated interchangeable lens for spatial video capture on Apple Vision Pro.

🌀 Tom’s Take:

The spatial video ecosystem is starting to take shape. Canon joins Blackmagic, which officially debuted its URSA Cine Immersive camera at SXSW 2025, to have dedicated camera systems designed to create content for the Apple Vision Pro. With new hardware making it easier to capture, software solutions like Acute, which we covered in a previous Reality Brief, offering CMS and management solutions, and Apple TV+ giving a home for immersive video, the key ingredients are all there for creator success.
