  • The new B888 line in Luohu District is Shenzhen’s first Level 4 autonomous Robobus route, operating without a safety driver.
  • Equipped with over 20 sensors, the Robobus uses 360-degree perception to navigate dense traffic and complex intersections.

WeRide and Shenzhen Bus Group have introduced Shenzhen’s first fully autonomous public bus line in the Luohu District. Known as the B888 route, it runs between Luohu Port and MixC Market and began operations on August 26 as a tribute to the city’s 45th anniversary as China’s first Special Economic Zone. Passengers can book rides through the Shenzhen Bus Travel WeChat mini program.

The Robobus uses Level 4 autonomous driving technology, relying on more than 20 sensors, including LiDAR and HD cameras, to achieve full 360-degree perception up to 200 meters. It can detect and respond to occluded or flickering traffic lights, as well as interpret complex road markings and signals. The system is designed to handle high-density traffic and safely manage passenger boarding through real-time curbside adjustments.

The B888 line is part of Shenzhen’s “20+8” industrial cluster strategy for advancing intelligent connected vehicles. With global deployments in nearly 30 cities, WeRide aims to continue expanding its autonomous public transport offerings across urban centers and tourism areas through local partnerships.

🌀 Tom’s Take:

By dedicating a high-profile route to fully autonomous operation, Shenzhen is turning its cityscape into a live testing ground for innovation. This level of municipal commitment can speed up real-world learnings and pave the way for broader, faster adoption at scale.
