Waymo Starts Airport Runs at San Francisco International
- Fully driverless Waymo rides are now available for select users traveling to and from San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
- Service begins at the SFO Rental Car Center, with plans to expand to terminal access in the future.
Waymo has introduced an autonomous ride service to the San Francisco International Airport, initially available to a limited group of riders before a full rollout to all riders over the next couple of months. Pickups and dropoffs will take place at the airport’s Rental Car Center, accessible via AirTrain, with future expansion to terminals under consideration.
“We are excited to launch Waymo passenger service at SFO,” said San Francisco International Airport Director Mike Nakornkhet, in an official news release. “As the global gateway to a region of innovation, this new option demonstrates our continued commitment to providing an extraordinary travel experience with transportation options that are safe, sustainable, and reliable.”
The airport addition comes as part of Waymo’s growing 260-square-mile Bay Area coverage zone. With recent freeway access enhancements, travel between SFO, San Jose International, and other regional destinations is now faster and more seamless for riders.
In a company blog post, Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana said the feature was among the most requested by users and strengthens ties with the city.
🌀 Tom’s Take:
Airport coverage is a litmus test for any ride service as it demands high volume, tight timing, and little room for error. If Waymo makes this work at SFO, it raises the ceiling everywhere else.
