  • Two compatible accessories, including a plastic replica and a cardboard model, enable 3D gameplay on Switch and Switch 2.

Nintendo is reviving the Virtual Boy system through its Switch Online + Expansion Pack service. The update includes a new Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics library and introduces two optional accessories that enable 3D gameplay on both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 systems.

Initial games include Teleroboxer and Galactic Pinball, with more titles to come. The Expansion Pack also offers access to other classic platforms like Game Boy Advance and SEGA Genesis. To play in 3D, members can use either a $99.99 molded accessory replicating the original Virtual Boy or a $24.99 cardboard version. Both include the necessary attachments and support standard Joy-Con controllers.

🌀 Tom’s Take:

The Virtual Boy was ahead of its time when it launched in 1995 with stereoscopic 3D, but its red-only display and awkward design led to poor sales and a short lifespan. Nintendo’s decision to revive it as an optional, low-cost Switch accessory is a clever nod to nostalgia. It won’t move the needle on VR, but it’s a fun way to re-use hardware people already own.
