TDK Acquires SoftEye to Power “Eyes for AI” in Smart Glasses

- SoftEye is a U.S.-based developer of custom chips, cameras, and algorithms for AI-powered smart glasses.
- TDK acquired the company to speed the development of complete smart glasses systems and support new eye-based AI interaction.
TDK Corporation announced it has purchased SoftEye, Inc., a firm specializing in integrated technologies for AI smart glasses. SoftEye is now a wholly owned subsidiary operating under TDK.
“SoftEye brings expertise in algorithms, camera, and low-power chip design which gives TDK leadership positions in driving consumer applications for AR related technologies,” stated Jim Tran, Corporate Officer, TDK Corporation, in a news release on the company's website.
Based in San Diego, SoftEye develops custom chips, cameras, and algorithms that enable an end-to-end system for smart glasses branded as "the eyes for AI". Its always-on chips and sensor systems feature eye intent technology, combining hardware and software to support low-power eye tracking and object recognition.
“We are building technologies for AI glasses connecting the user with generative AI, which fits directly in line with TDK strategy for smart glasses which can connect people with AI for a more intuitive and compelling user experience,” continued Te-Won Lee, CEO, SoftEye, in an official news release.
The acquisition allows TDK to accelerate the delivery of a complete system for smart glasses that integrates custom chips, sensors, and software. It also enables the creation of a new Human Machine Interface (HMI), where users engage with AI through eye movement.
