  • SoftBank has signed a definitive agreement to acquire ABB’s robotics business, with the transaction expected to close in mid-to-late 2026.
  • The deal supports SoftBank’s strategic focus on “Physical AI” and expands its AI robotics capabilities by integrating ABB’s globally recognized platform.

SoftBank Group signed a definitive agreement to acquire ABB’s robotics division for $5.375 billion. SoftBank’s board has approved the deal, and it is now subject to regulatory approvals in the EU, China, and the U.S. ABB will first transfer the robotics business into a newly formed company, which SoftBank will fully acquire through a subsidiary.

The move supports SoftBank’s broader mission to realize artificial super intelligence (ASI) for the advancement of humanity by strengthening its robotics portfolio. According to SoftBank, ABB’s platform, backed by 7,000 employees and a global customer base, will complement existing investments in AI robotics such as Berkshire Grey, AutoStore, and Skild AI.

“SoftBank’s next frontier is Physical AI. Together with ABB Robotics, we will unite world-class technology and talent under our shared vision to fuse Artificial Super Intelligence and robotics — driving a groundbreaking evolution that will propel humanity forward,” said Masayoshi Son, Chairman & CEO, SoftBank Group Corp., in a press release.

ABB, a global automation and electrification company, opted for a full divestment of its robotics division rather than a public spin-off. The unit, which generated $2.3 billion in revenue in 2024, will be treated as discontinued operations in ABB’s financial statements starting in Q4 2025.

🌀 Tom’s Take:
