  • Dimension launches ViV, a robotic virtual production setup enabling moving LED volumes.
  • Two synchronized robotic arms allow real-time camera and LED wall motion for complex scene execution.

Dimension has unveiled Vectored Imaging Volume (ViV), which is described as the world’s first robotics-powered virtual production system. Developed by its Futures team with CTO Callum Macmillan and robotics expert Dickon Mitchell, ViV introduces motion to LED panels. This feature has long been static in virtual production, creating a dynamic environment for capturing otherwise unachievable camera shots.

The system employs two robotic arms: one carries a 2x3-meter LED wall, while the other holds the camera. These components move in real time and synchronize with the virtual environment. According to Dimension, this enables shots involving multiple physical spaces, vertical camera angles, and actor movement around corners—scenarios that static LED walls typically limit.

"There are often several shots that aren’t possible because of the camera movement needed to achieve them, with ViV, filmmakers continue to take advantage of VP’s benefits, while also being able to achieve those impossible shots," said Callum Macmillan, Co-founder and CTO at Dimension Studio on the company's blog.

ViV was tested in two demo shoots, "The Climb" and "The Office," showcasing motion-enhanced shots that were not feasible with conventional volumes. Dimension says the system reduces cost using fewer high-quality LED panels and offers a scalable solution for independent creators and brand content production. ViV is now production-ready as a standalone system and an add-on to larger VP setups.

🌀 Tom's Take:

ViV is a striking example of how robotics drives digital transformation across creative industries. It shows how spatial computing can expand virtual production's creative range and practical accessibility.
