Purdue University Opens Research Facility and Certificates for Spatial Computing

Purdue University has officially opened a new research facility focused on spatial computing, developed in collaboration with Apple. The hub features Apple Vision Pro technology and is designed to advance how students and researchers engage with immersive digital tools.
“Spatial computing is not only a tool for advancing discovery in engineering and science — it also turbocharges collaboration in sectors that are adopting these technologies,” said Milind Kulkarni, the Michael and Katherine Birck Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in a news release. “This hub gives our students the opportunity to experiment with the same technologies that are shaping tomorrow’s industries, ensuring they graduate ready to lead in fast-changing fields.”
The facility brings together augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and 3D mapping to support simulation-based learning and research. Purdue leaders highlighted semiconductor fabrication and pharmaceutical manufacturing as examples of fields where students can now explore complex processes virtually.
Purdue also plans to offer an online graduate certificate in spatial computing as part of its existing interdisciplinary tech degrees. Additional credit and nondegree courses will be introduced as the program expands.
