Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Integrates AR to Accelerate Test Rig Assembly
- TeamViewer’s spatial computing platform is now used by Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 to guide assembly using live AR instructions.
- The system projects animated overlays from CAD models onto real components, reducing setup time and ensuring full accuracy.
At its Testing and Development Lab, the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team is deploying TeamViewer’s augmented reality platform, Frontline, to accelerate rig assembly for the testing program. According to a news release, the team adopted this AR system to speed up how parts are prepared for high-stress evaluation, supporting both new vehicle development and mid-season changes.
Using AR running on tablets powered by TeamViewer’s Frontline platform, the F1 team views animated instructions directly on the physical test rigs. Based on 3D CAD models, these overlays and run in real time to guide rig assembly. They replace printed drawings and manual checking, which previously slowed down the setup process. As engineers follow the overlays, they can immediately see where each part belongs within the assembly, using the live projection to confirm that all required components are present and correctly installed before the test begins.
“We use TeamViewer to minimize setup time in Testing and Development and ensure all rigs are 100% accurate before testing begins,” said Steve Riley, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team’s Head of IT Operations and Development, in an official news release. “Instead of referring to build guides and designs which are elsewhere in the facility, our team can incorporate AR into their workflow and immediately see how the parts form that assembly. And gains in every area of the team’s operations add up to improved performance where it really matters – on the racetrack,” said Riley.
The Frontline platform is part of TeamViewer’s broader offerings, which organizations globally use to connect people and processes through AR-enhanced interfaces. TeamViewer reports a customer base of around 645,000 companies across industries, supporting both desk-based and frontline workers.
🌀 Tom’s Take:
For a team like Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1, shaving time off rig assembly while maintaining accuracy is a competitive advantage. AR is being used here to deliver that value.
