Intuitive Buys Southern Europe Distributors to Establish Direct Operations
- Intuitive completed the acquisition of regional distributors handling its surgical and endoluminal systems across Italy, Spain, Portugal, Malta, San Marino, and nearby territories.
- Around 250 employees join Intuitive as the company brings sales and operations in these markets under its own European commercial organization.
Intuitive announced the completion of a deal to acquire the distribution operations that previously handled its da Vinci and Ion systems in several Southern European markets. The businesses operated by ab medica, Abex, Excelencia Robótica, and related affiliates are now owned by Intuitive.
“Today marks an important step in our commitment to expanding access to proven, safe and effective minimally invasive care to more patients across Europe,” said Intuitive chief executive officer Dave Rosa, in a company announcement. “Our direct presence means we are better positioned to meet the needs of our customers in these geographies as we drive forward our shared goals of improving patient outcomes, improving patient and care team experience, increasing access to minimally invasive care, and lowering the total cost of care.”
With the acquisition finalized, the company now runs direct operations across Italy, Spain, Portugal, Malta, San Marino, and associated territories. The newly integrated teams become part of Intuitive’s European commercial and marketing structure under regional leadership.
The announcement also highlighted the existing presence of the company’s surgical platforms in the region. More than 470 da Vinci systems were installed across Italy, Spain, and Portugal as of the end of 2025, while the Ion endoluminal platform has recently been introduced in Italy and Spain.

Bringing distribution in-house gives Intuitive more direct control over how its systems are sold and supported in Southern Europe. Owning the distribution layer also lets the company capture more value as adoption of robotic surgery continues to grow in the region.
