  • Gemini AI powers alerts, video summaries, and search by analyzing real-time footage from new Nest cameras.
  • Upgraded sensors and 2K video help the system recognize people, animals, vehicles, and objects more precisely.

Google has launched a new generation of Nest cameras and a doorbell built to power on-device AI. These are the first home security products designed specifically to support Gemini for Home, Google’s multimodal AI system. By pairing upgraded camera hardware with Gemini’s ability to interpret video and language together, the system can deliver detailed alerts, scene summaries, and voice-searchable video.

To make this possible, the devices feature 2K HDR video, wider and taller fields of view, and new low-light sensors that keep footage in color longer. These specs provide the level of visual detail Gemini needs to detect people, animals, vehicles, and objects with high accuracy, and generate descriptions like “dog jumps out of playpen” or answer prompts like “What happened to the vase in the living room?”

Alongside the new Nest hardware, Google also introduced a redesigned Google Home Speaker built for Gemini and announced new third-party devices from Walmart’s onn brand. The onn Indoor Camera Wired and onn Video Doorbell Wired offer Gemini-powered alerts and video features at lower price points, and can be managed through the same Google Home app.

🌀 Tom’s Take:

With Gemini now powering Nest’s new cameras, Google is signaling that the smart home is entering its AI-native phase. AI needs eyes, and these cameras are the first real step in making that useful.
