Epic Games Acquires Loci to Automate 3D Asset Tagging and Protection

- Loci's AI will enhance automatic tagging and search across Fab and Unreal Editor for Fortnite.
- The integration also aims to improve IP protection and content moderation using 3D similarity detection.
Epic Games has acquired Loci, a company specializing in AI for 3D content understanding and tagging. Loci’s tools automate the process of categorizing 3D assets, eliminating the need for manual tagging and making digital assets easier to manage and discover at scale.
Epic plans to integrate Loci’s technology throughout its ecosystem, specifically citing Fab and Unreal Editor for Fortnite. The acquisition will enable automatic indexing of custom assets and enhance search, sharing, and discoverability. Loci’s 3D similarity detection tool will also be used to flag potential IP violations and support moderation efforts.
“Epic creates and hosts a huge amount of 3D content across our ecosystem, and we are always looking for ways to automate artist workflows and improve discoverability of content,” says Lucia Specia, Director of the Machine Learning Solutions team at Epic Games on the company's blog. “We look forward to working with the Loci team to develop novel AI tools to improve how our community creates and modifies 3D content across Fab, Unreal Engine and our entire ecosystem."
🌀 Tom's Take:
As UGC floods 3D platforms like Fab and Unreal Editor for Fortnite, Loci provides Epic with the backend support to tag, track, and moderate at scale, signaling that 3D assets are the next dominant content layer.
