Copresence Unlocks Fast AI Avatar Creation With Just a Phone as Platform Exits Beta
  • Copresence’s AI-powered pipeline creates fully rigged, photorealistic avatars in minutes with just a smartphone.
  • Its mobile-first approach supports end-user scanning “in the wild,” making the platform scalable for XR, gaming, and telepresence applications.

Copresence's AI-powered avatar creation platform has moved out of beta, making it possible for anyone to create an avatar with just a smartphone. Already trusted by leading gaming and technology companies, the platform is designed to deliver production-ready results in minutes. Users can now create lifelike and fully rigged, photorealistic avatars ready for games, virtual worlds, and immersive applications.

Copresence Version 1.0 uses a new AI-powered creation process that fixes common problems in 3D avatar creation, like bad lighting, loss of detail, and unrealistic hair. The platform is powered by a proprietary deep learning system trained on high-quality studio data, but it works with just a smartphone, letting people scan themselves without special equipment. Key upgrades include lighting-aware textures that remove shadows, improved handling of facial details such as lips and eyes, automated skin tone estimation, and better hair strand reconstruction for a wide range of hairstyles. The pipeline now generates a fully rigged avatar in 2–3 minutes, with hair and texture processing running in parallel.

While in beta, Copresence used the opportunity to study user behavior around scanning and avatar use. The team told Remix Reality that one of the biggest learnings from the beta was the importance of guides to help people scan themselves effectively. As scanning with your phone is still relatively new, active guides embedded in the user experience were crucial in helping users perform better scans. Combining these guides with the use of AI to fix issues, such as delighting, increases the chance of a successful avatar model.

While this may be a new use case for the phone, the smartphone is the key to scaling for avatar creation. Capture studios are expensive and impractical for most users, but almost everyone has a smartphone. This makes the Copresence platform an extremely viable solution for XR and 3D applications that are looking to avatars as a new form of identity and personalization for their virtual environments or games. Thanks to advancements in both software and hardware, the smartphone has become a powerful scanning machine.  With each new generation of phones, such as the recently debuted iPhone 17 or Pixel 10, comes new and improved cameras that increase the quality of avatar models. This enables solutions like Copresence to push the fidelity even further.

With a solid pipeline for creating 3D avatars now officially launched, Copresence told Remix Reality that the team will be focusing its efforts on improving the fidelity of likeness and realism of its AI-powered avatars for XR. They believe this will unlock telepresence as a key use case for XR.
