BRUNNER and Varjo Launch Europe’s First Certified XR Flight Simulator

- Varjo XR-4 Focal Edition enables the first mixed reality simulator approved by EASA.
- BRUNNER's NOVASIM MR DA42 now qualifies for European civil aviation pilot training.
BRUNNER Elektronik AG has developed the first-ever mixed reality flight simulator to earn certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), using Varjo's XR-4 Focal Edition headset. Lufthansa Aviation Training is deploying the simulator, which replicates the Diamond DA42 aircraft and functions as a Flight and Navigation Procedures Trainer II (FNPT II).
“We are proud to lead the way in redefining aviation training by achieving the first-ever EASA qualification for a mixed reality simulator,” said Roger Klingler, CEO of BRUNNER Elektronik AG, in a release on the Varjo website. “With the NOVASIM MR DA42, we’ve combined precision Swiss engineering with breakthrough XR technology to deliver a simulator that meets demanding regulatory standards while providing unmatched realism and flexibility in pilot training. This accomplishment is the result of close collaboration with Varjo, combining our expertise in simulation hardware and software integration with the cutting-edge visual fidelity of the Varjo XR-4 Focal Edition. “
The NOVASIM MR DA42 uses Varjo’s XR-4 headset to blend real and virtual elements with human-eye resolution. Pilots interact with familiar physical controls while the system responds in real time, creating a highly immersive experience. Built-in eye tracking helps instructors see where trainees are looking, revealing missed cues and improving feedback. This is the first time a mixed reality simulator has been approved for civil flight hours in Europe.
By combining heightened realism with richer performance data, the simulator enhances training outcomes and sets a new standard for the industry. The certification establishes a precedent for immersive technology adoption within civil aviation training environments.

🌀 Tom’s Take:
This milestone highlights two key drivers behind XR’s value in enterprise training: realism and data. High quality displays enable visuals which make the simulation feel real, boosting training effectiveness. Meanwhile, onboard tools like eye tracking give instructors access to behavioral insights that traditional systems can’t capture.
