Be My Eyes Helped Shape Meta's New Wearables SDK

- Be My Eyes partnered with Meta as an alpha collaborator to co-develop the Wearables Device Access Toolkit.
- The toolkit opens Meta AI glasses to developers, expanding app capabilities through sensor and camera access.
Be My Eyes played a foundational role in developing Meta’s new Wearables Device Access Toolkit (DAT), according to a post by Be My Eyes CEO, Michael Buckley, on LinkedIn. The DAT gives developers access to on-device sensors, including the camera, open-ear audio, and microphone, to build hands-free experiences for Meta’s AI glasses. Buckley said Be My Eyes engineers worked alongside Meta’s team across two continents, contributing thousands of hours to help shape what would become the toolkit.
Be My Eyes is the first accessibility app for blind and low-vision users available on Meta’s AI smart glasses. The voice-triggered experience, “Hey Meta, Be My Eyes”, connects users hands-free to sighted volunteers, leveraging the glasses’ open-ear audio and built-in camera for real-time assistance.
This integration makes routine tasks more accessible. Be My Eyes posted a new video on its social media of CBS coverage, which shows the system in action. It highlights how this hands-free support enhances independence and confidence across daily life.

🌀 Tom’s Take:
Wearables are beginning to fulfill a long-held promise in assistive technology, offering users a powerful way to access both human support and AI assistance. With the DAT soon to be in developers’ hands, more apps may soon follow Be My Eyes in unlocking the potential of AI glasses for accessibility.
