  • Lyft and May Mobility have launched a pilot program offering autonomous rides using hybrid-electric Toyota Sienna vehicles.
  • Human standby operators will accompany initial rides to ensure comfort and safety as the service expands in Atlanta.

Lyft and May Mobility have launched their first autonomous vehicle service together, starting with a pilot in Midtown Atlanta. Riders using the Lyft app can now be matched with one of May Mobility’s hybrid-electric Toyota Sienna Autono-MaaS vehicles. The companies describe it as a “major, first step” in making autonomous rides more accessible to the public.

The pilot starts with limited hours and a small fleet of retrofitted Toyota Siennas. Each vehicle includes a human operator who can step in if needed, answer questions, and help riders feel comfortable during their trip. The service is built around May Mobility’s Multi-Policy Decision Making platform, which analyzes thousands of scenarios every second and makes real-time decisions to guide the vehicle safely. Lyft says the goal is to show how autonomous rides can enhance, rather than replace, the human experience.

Lyft and May Mobility say the Atlanta launch is meant to serve as a model for future deployments. They highlight safety, transparency, and human support as key to how this technology should enter new communities. As local riders begin using the service, the companies plan to grow vehicle availability and hours in the next few months. This approach will help guide how Lyft and May Mobility AVs expand across the Southeast and beyond.

🌀 Tom’s Take:

Having someone in the car is about building trust. It shows Lyft and May Mobility know riders need a bridge to this new experience, and they’re starting with people, not just product.
