  • Alterego has revealed a device that picks up silent speech signals so users can communicate without talking, typing, or touching a screen.

Alterego has revealed a new wearable that lets people talk to AI without saying anything out loud. The device, which the company says is "the first near-telepathic interface", picks up signals the brain sends to the speech system before words are spoken. Alterego says this removes the need for keyboards, screens, or voice commands and makes communication faster and more natural.

The core of the system is called Silent Sense. It can detect speech in three ways, including speaking out loud, mouthing words, or silently intending to speak. Alterego says, the device "only responds to intentional, silent speech. Your private thoughts stay private, and you direct every interaction". With this device, users can type messages, search the internet, control apps, ask questions through built-in cameras, and have silent conversations with other people.

The device is hands-free, screen-free, and designed to stay out of the way. Alterego says it can also help people who have trouble speaking. CEO Arnav Kapur created the original version at the MIT Media Lab. The company is now offering early access as it continues development.

🌀 Tom’s Take:

Wearables connect the body to the machine, and Alterego shows what happens when that connection reaches into silent intent. Early brain-controlled devices were ahead of their time, but now that AI is everywhere and people are more comfortable wearing tech, the question is, are we more ready for these types of devices?
